Throughout the year, BASC also makes a number of Rising Star Awards to athletes who are not on funding and who have made a special performance at major championships. Special performances include personal bests or qualifying for the final at that championship. Awards are made by the BASC Committee, and winners also receive a cheque for £250
Shelayna Oskan-Clarke was awarded the BASC Rising Star Award for her performances in the 800m at the World Championships in Beijing.
Second at the British Championships, Shelayna had to achieve the qualifying time twice before the deadline. She won her semi-final at Beijing in a PB of 1:58.86, and finished 5th in the final also in a sub-2 minute time. The Rising Star Award is given for a significant performance in a major international event or championship by an unfunded up-and-coming athlete.
