Despite the cancellation of the BASC Annual Dinner, the annual awards were announced at the AGM held online. Phoebe Gill, Ed Bird, Innes Fitzgerald and Jake Odey Jordan sent videos thanking the club for their awards.
Katharine Merry Award winner: Innes Fitzgerald
Innes Fitzerald recorded a personal best time of 8:57.01 to finish fourth in the 3000m final at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru. In March, Innes competed at the U20 World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Belgrade. In hot and sunny conditions she finished as the first European home in 17th place.
Ron Jewkes Trophy winner: Ed Bird
Ed Bird produced a stunning finish to clinch 3000m bronze at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru. Ed won the BASC Young Athlete award in 2022.
Young Female Athlete of the Year: Phoebe Gill
17-year-old Phoebe from St Albans, was the youngest member of Team GB’s athletics squad at the Paris Olympics and came fourth in her semi-final of the 800m.
Earlier in the year Phoebe had sealed selection for the games by winning the British Championships. In May, Phoebe broke the 45-year-old European under-18 record by clocking 1:57.86 at the Belfast Irish Milers Meet. She has consistently run sub two minutes for the 800m this season. Phoebe won the BASC Young Athlete of the Year award in 2023.
Young Male Athlete of the Year: Jake Odey-Jordan
16-year-old Jake won bronze in the 200m World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru. He also won a silver medal in the men’s 4x100m relay, just 0.02 seconds behind Jamaica.
