BASC Awards

Each year British Athletics Supporters Club recognises athletes who have shone in various categories. They are particularly designed to reward up and coming athletes.

All our members are entitled to vote for the BASC Athlete of the Year. They may vote through this website, by email or by post. Details are announced each year in the autumn.

The Susanna Ingram Award is named after a former BASC Committee member who died from cerebral palsy. It is awarded to male and female para-athletes and is chosen by the BASC Committee based on outstanding performance in the previous twelve months.

The Katharine Merry Award is for the best female Championship performance by a junior athlete (18-19 years old on 31 December in the year of competition) in the eyes of the BASC Committee. The male equivalent is the Ron Jewkes Trophy.

The BASC Young Athlete of the Year Award is made for performances over the course of a season by a youth athlete (16-17 years old on 31 December in the year of competition). Winners of the award are selected by the BASC Committee.

Throughout the year, BASC makes a number of Breakthrough Awards to senior athletes (usually older than 19 and younger than 25) who have made a special performance for the first time at a major international championship. Special performances include personal bests, or qualifying for a final at that championship i.e. it is “special” in relation to their current performance level. Awards are made at the discretion of the BASC Committee and they receive a certificate, a small payment and an invitation to the Annual Dinner.

Athlete of the Meet awards were introduced in 2017. Events with a mass viewing for UK members eg on TV or in the UK are selected. At major meets, at the discretion of the sub-committee, there could be more than one category. The sub-committee nominates 4 athletes (per category if more than one) as soon as possible after the event has concluded and a Twitter Poll is launched for 24 or 48 hours. At the end of the poll social media is updated, and the winner receives a small payment and an invitation to the Annual Dinner.
